Motherwell Automation To Present At Remote Monitoring & Control Technologies Conference, August 2010 Thursday, June 17, 2010
Rob Blackburn, Motherwell Automation's Industrial Engineering Consultant, will be a guest presenter at the upcoming 2010 Remote Monitoring & Control Technologies Conference, being held in Perth at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on 11 -12 August.
Rob's presentation is entitled "Creating Redundant Connections for Large Scale Networks: A West Australian Case Study" and focuses the use of an innovative new Ethernet technology for the creation of multiple redundant Ethernet networks. It goes beyond the current limitations of redundant technologies and will showcase how this new technology can be implemented to provide reliable and flexible communications to remote and centralised monitoring and control platforms using a Ethernet. A West Australian based, minerals and resources orientated case study will be used to demonstrate the flexibility, scalability and cost efficiency of this innovative technology. It will also highlight the short coming of previous technologies that set this new redundant networking technology in a class of its own. The case study will show the necessity for reliability and fast fault recovery redundant communications in remote areas providing monitoring and control.

The 2 day conference brings together a host of communications and controls engineers and professionals in a relaxed environment that promotes education, communication and networking. The focus of the conference is to inform delegates about the advancements in remote technology in Australia and worldwide and explore how this technology can be used to enhance workplace efficiency and reduce costs when dealing with remote locations. Delegates will learn how to properly design remote service systems for their customers and protect them.
- Learn about new standards and technologies and how they impact on your systems.
- Learn how to select the best remote monitoring and control system for your application.
- Adapt your existing systems to take advantage of these new remote technologies.
Remote management, monitoring and control of distributed assets and equipment is a fast developing area of engineering and technology and is becoming a key strategic tool. Remote applications vary from offering technical support to a customer with automated systems thousands of kms away to remote control of vehicles to military bomb disposal units. With increasing industry competition, the use of remote diagnostics has become a customer-driven requirement. Utilising remote technologies can reduce service response times and allow companies to resolve customer issues remotely while still maintaining a close relationship. This is considerably more than simply a SCADA system and encompasses industrial automation and data communications to the remote device with a focus on unmanned installations.

Featured Topics: Prevent Power Surges with Full Spectrum Surge Protection
A voltage spike is a momentary extreme burst of electricity in an electrical circuit. This energy spike may be short-lived, but could still be enough to seriously damage the electronics. Although voltage spikes are brief events that rarely last more than a few microseconds, all it takes is one snowball to set off an avalanche... ...

CSense is a Necessity in an Economic Downturn Wednesday, August 19, 2009
There are two rarely acknowledged benefits of an economic downturn; it's a wakeup call to cut production costs and it gives you more time to think about how you're going to do that cutting. Just a year ago, cutting production costs was the first item on the agenda – now it's the only item on the agenda. And the old adage of being too busy to try something new can no longer be used as an excuse because a slowdown, no matter how modest, gives you the ideal opportunity to implement improvements so that you'll be ready for the inevitable upturn.
According to Warren Buffett, possibly one of the greatest investors of all time, "Be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful." Since the Great Depression of 1929, there's never been a more opportune time to be greedy and to want a bigger share of the pie when the economy turns. It's Buffett's opinion that "...most major companies will be setting new profit records 5, 10 and 20 years from now."
